Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
What kid didn’t dream of becoming an astronaut when they grew up? Well, here’s a grouping of four autographed items from a pair of Canadians who each lived out that dream and flew into outer space. The autographs of Canadian astronauts Marc Garneau and Chris Hadfield are featured, with each having signed two items for a total of four signed pieces. Garneau served as a naval officer and was selected as an astronaut, part of the 1983 NRC Group. On October 5, 1984, he became the first Canadian in outer space as part of STS-41-G and served on two subsequent Space Shuttle missions—STS-77 and STS-97. Garneau’s bold black marker dedicated autographs appear on two pieces. He has signed “To Bill, All the Best, Marc Garneau” on a shot of himself in his space suit with the Canadian flag proudly displayed on the left shoulder holding his helmet on an 8.5” x11” photo from the Canadian Space Agency. He has signed his Christmas card as a member of parliament above his name in bold blue marker, along with the “To Bill, With Best Wishes, Marc Garneau” dedicated signature in bold black marker inside the top of the card. Hadfield, who memorably sang and played David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” from outer space, was the first Canadian to perform extravehicular activity in outer space, he has flown two Space Shuttle missions and also served as commander of the International Space Station. Space missions: Expedition 34, Expedition 35, STS-100, STS-74, Soyuz TMA-07M. His bold black marker autograph graces each of two 3” x 4” “Chris Hadfield, An Astronaut’s Guide to Life on Earth” promotional cards for his book.
