Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Excelling on both the ice rink and gridiron while attending Princeton, Hobey Baker is remembered as the first major American hockey star, with his legend sealed when as commander of the 141st Aero Squadron during WWI, he lost his life while test-piloting a plane in December of 1918. We have an exceedingly rare Spalding one-piece Hobey Baker signature model stick, most likely originating from the 1910s. Full size with an especially thick handle and upper shaft and featuring a pinned blade, “Spalding” appears branded over the mid-shaft, with “Hobey Baker” in script, also branded, over the lower shaft. While condition isn’t ideal with a large warp to the blade beginning at the heel along with a large crack that runs across the middle portion of the blade to the toe, the stick still displays well, and can serve as the centerpiece to any antique stick, Baker or Spalding collection.
