Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
A hefty price to bring The Big E to The City of Brotherly Love, Eric Lindros' rights were awarded through arbitration to the Flyers in exchange for six players (Steve Duchesne, Peter Forsberg, Ron Hextall, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci and Chris Simon), two draft picks and $15 million. This Flyers jersey was worn by the HOFer during the press conference shortly after he was acquired, making it possibly the first Philadelphia jersey he donned, and it’s been photo-matched. Maska tagging is affixed to the collar with “Press Conference” handwritten, along with “Spring 1992” and “Don’t Touch” on the reverse of the label. Styled with tackle twill team crest and identifiers, “Lindros” appears across the nameplate. A signed LOA from Eric Lindros will accompany.
Regarding the previously mentioned photo-matches, an included photo has been matched to the visible white thread across the upper middle portion of the second “8” on the right sleeve, and to the uneven extra threading along the bottom left section of the team crest. With just a few visible marks beneath the team crest, the jersey remains in beautiful condition.
Taken by the Quebec Nordiques with the first pick of the 1991 NHL Draft, Lindros resisted signing with the club. He spent the 1991-92 season playing junior hockey and skating for Canada at the 1992 World Junior Championship and the 1992 Olympics. Lindros reiterated to the Nordiques that he would play outside the NHL in 1992-93 and re-enter the draft in 1993.
Faced with the possibility of losing Lindros with no compensation, the Nordiques began entertaining offers for Lindros' rights, with the culmination of that effort set for the 1992 NHL Draft in Montreal.
June 20, 1992 marked one of the stranger days in NHL history: Just prior to the start of the draft, the Nordiques twice traded Lindros' rights -- first to the Philadelphia Flyers then to the New York Rangers.
