Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Led by superstar Wayne Gretzky’s 149 points, the Edmonton Oilers would finish in 2nd place in the Smythe Division behind a strong Clagary Flames squad at the conclusion of the 1987-88 NHL season. The Oilers would then lose only two postseason games on their way to their third championship in just four seasons. This unawarded 1988 Stanley Cup championship trophy was produced by Boffey, and is similar to the examples awarded to each member of the Edmonton Oilers by the NHL in a tradition dating back to 1958 (this example was made later than the examples presented to the Oilers in 1988). Standing a majestic 13” and mounted to a wooden base with green felt underside and mounted “Boffey” sticker, the names of the men who made it happen are engraved in three rows beneath the team executives, with “Edmonton Oilers” and “1987-88” engraved above.
In pleasing condition with a few surface blemishes and scratches visible, the top bowl is just slightly bent, with the upper section somewhat loose and able to swivel from the main body. There is surface wear over the rim of the adjoining section, with additional surface wear along the very bottom just above the base. We should also note that the green felt underside is not how the trophy was likely issued, with the felt and/or base possibly changed at some point.
