Serving in the Canadian Forces after retiring, goaltender Ed Staniowski was the inaugural recipient of the CHL Player of the Year award in 1975, with his NHL career consisting of 219 games spread over 10 seasons including appearing for St Louis, Winnipeg and Hartford. Iconic in mask design, we have the example Staniowski wore with both the Blues and Jets. The work of noted mask maker extraordinaire Greg Harrison and worn for 7-8 years of Ed’s career, the fiberglass mask witnessed a number of changes occurring throughout its NHL service. First, there was no design when originally worn by Staniowski in the mid-1970s, with the blue note design added by Harrison in the late-1970s. Then, after being traded to Winnipeg in 1981, the mask was repainted dark blue and white, with a red diagonal stripe. Later in the decade, the mask was sent back to Harrison, with the blue note design restored. Contacted in the early-2010s by the mask’s then owner, Staniowski confirmed that the mask was the one he wore during his career, with the dead giveaways being "A significant dent from a Dennis Hull slap shot above the right eye and a crack going through the air hole on the underside of the chin." Letters from both Ed Staniowski and Greg Harrison will accompany.
The original back plate is not included, with Staniowski signing the interior in black marker, adding his number, with a signed photo of Ed also included. Remnants of the interior padding remains, with the strapping appearing original (minus one changed buckle), with evidence of the Winnipeg design underneath, with red paint along the edging from the Winnipeg stripe still visible. Vintage photos of Staniowski with the Blues and Jets show all the holes on the mask in the same spots, with a number of digital images while with the Jets in 1981-82 showing a small crack/line just below the hole directly beneath the mouth, but the photos are not clear enough to call a definitive photo-match.
