The last NHL goaltender to play every minute of every game in a season (1963–64), Ed Johnston spent almost a dozen seasons in a Bruins uniform, with a noteworthy 3 Stanley Cups won throughout his career as both a player and executive. We have a great group of items hailing from the Montreal native’s career, with a signed glove worn in the 1970s, along with a pair of game-used sticks including a signed example employed while with the Bruins in the early-to-mid-1970s. The glove is accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance, with an LOA to be included for the signed stick.
The glove is a Cooper Custom Built Professional model with intact pocket and seam lacing, with embossed oval padding added over the wrist guard. Great use is exhibited with heavy rubbing to the leather in spots, along with additional wear to the palm. Johnston has signed over the added padding, “My No 1 glove, Ed Johnston", with the detailed letter of provenance stating that the glove was given directly by Johnston to a collector from Revere, Massachusetts during his playing days with Boston. Next, the first stick is a Northland Pro with “Johnston” stamped-on, along with supplier stamps on each side of the handle from Woody Dumart. The stick retains its original black tape over the blade and paddle and white over the knob, with most of the upper and lower striping accents over the paddle intact. Nice use is exhibited on the lumber, with wear to the underside of the blade along with some minor chipping along the heel section. Johnston has added an attractive black marker signature across the front side of the paddle near the “Northland” stamping, with this notable as it appears to be hand-painted, with the “stamps” slightly differing on each side. Lastly, the second stick is a Victoriaville Pattern Made Pro model from the early-1970s with “Johnston” and “1” handwritten, with traces of the yellow accents that were once over the handle and paddle. The original black tape is in place over the blade, paddle and knob, with great use exhibited with heavy wear to the blade including a few large cracks, along with red goal post paint transfer over the shaft. We should also note that both sticks have small grooves into the tape along the backside of each blade from banging the stick against the tip of the skates, a common trait with some netminders.
