Boasting a total attendance of just under 50,000, the 2002 memorial Cup featured the WHL’s Kootenay Ice in the final vs Victoriaville from the Q, with the former securing their first CHL championship with a 6-3 victory. Hailing from the collection of longtime CHL and WHL president Ed Chynoweth and consigned by his direct family, we have a 2002 Kootenay Ice Memorial Cup champions 10K gold ring that was presented to the important hockey administrator. Size 9 1/2 with a weight of 36 grams, the Memorial Cup is pictured on the face along with sixteen brilliant cut inset diamonds ranging from .02 ct to .05ct, with “2002” below. The left shank features “Chynoweth” along with an Ice logo, while the right contains “Champions” with a WHL logo. The inner band has the teams and score engraved, along with a hallmark and “10K”. Comes with an LOA from the family.
A number of scratches and tiny gouges are present along the band, with additional examples present on each shank. There is also some surface wear to the tableau. Chynoweth served as the president of the WHL from 1972-95 and president of the CHL from 1975-95. Passing from cancer in 2008, the WHL renamed its championship trophy the Ed Chynoweth Cup in his honour. Chynoweth was posthumously elected to the HOF as a builder late in 2008.
