This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/19/2023
Dating to “Eddie the Eagle’s” second season in “The Lone Star State” as a member of the Dallas Stars in which he posted a record of 35-15-9 in 61 games played, proudly presented here, and hailing from Belfour’s personal collection, is this mask worn by the 2011 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee during the 1998-99 season that has been video and photo-matched to the 1999 Stanley Cup Playoffs and Finals including the pivotal Cup clinching 6th game on June 19th, 1999. Besting the likes of fellow HOFers Grant Fuhr, Patrick Roy and Dominik Hasek in the playoffs as Dallas would win their first Stanley Cup in franchise history, the Warwick made offering feature’s Ed’s beautiful trademark eagles over each side of the protective head piece while his customary “Make-a-Wish Foundation” design resides over the chin section. The back plate has additional custom graphics showcasing a 1941 Willys advertising Ed’s racing company, named after his Carman, Manitoba hometown. With most of the interior padding present on the interior, it should be noted that a couple pieces are loose though can be pressed back into place, most notably the foam on the forehead which still has the cloth sweatband affixed. Sporting dual-colour strapping to coincide with the placement of the custom graphics, three decals from mask maker Warwick remain affixed to the interior including one that covers up handwritten particulars penned by Gary Warwick in gold ink behind the right ear while additional handwritten information pertaining to the production date is found over a label behind the chin section. Displaying “98/99 Cup” handwritten in blue marker by Belfour beneath the top section, the mask hails directly from his personal collection and comes accompanied by his signed LOA.
Exhibiting great game-use via a few scratches, surface marks and a bit of red paint transfer visible, the mask displays a replacement white coloured cage over the face for display purposes that is not original to the mask and isn't from Belfour's personal collection though was sourced directly from Warwick. Displaying signs of use over the padding on the interior and strapping harness, the ends of which has been sealed from fraying by glue, a piece of tape that one covered Ed’s website on the backplate is no longer present though some of its residue is.
Regarding the aforementioned video and photo-matches, screen captures from Game 2 of the 1999 Western Conference Finals vs Colorado on May 24th have been matched to black marks present over the eagle on the left side of the mark behind its eye with it also being donned by Ed during Game 6 on June 1st vs Colorado based on particulars of the paint job and their placement. For the Stanley Cup Finals, the mask is matched to screen captures from an unknown game once again showing the marks behind the eye of the eagle on the left side and is again matched to particulars of the paint job in footage from Game 4 on June 12th. Getty Image #72319612 (June 12th, 1999 vs Buffalo – Stanley Cup Finals Game 4) is matched to the black marks behind the eagles eye on the left side, the black puck mark on the forehead and the chip on the top between the two beaks. Lastly, an image from The Dallas Morning News dated to the second period of the Cup-clinching Game 6 is matched the puck mark on the forehead and dried glue on the black strap on the left side of the mask while a screen capture from the celebration after the game shows the correct placement of the Steve Chiasson memorial sticker on the backplate. The mask will be accompanied by a Warwick travel/carry bag as well as copies of the mentioned images/screen captures.
