Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Offered is a rare and interesting piece of Canada's international hockey history! In 1966, the Drumheller Miners captured the Allan Cup, Canada's national senior championship, before embarking on a tour of Europe. This vintage durene knit jersey differs slightly from the ones the team wore in 1966 as it has had the word Drumheller added to the chest in black and you can easily make out where it once had large block letters spelling "CANADA" across the back above the numbers and the outline of "CENTENNIAL" arched below that is also no longer present. Sadly, the team removed these letters when they returned home and recycled the jerseys for later use. Also included with the jersey we have a pair of programs along with a modern framed display of the 1938-39 Drumheller team.
The Drumheller tour of Europe in the winter of 1966-67 included a good number of overseas games, including the Ahearne Cup tournament held in Stockholm, Sweden. The Miners are believed to be the first free-world hockey team to compete in East Germany during the Cold War. We should also note that in 1967-68 Terry Simpson wore the #18, so the possibility exists that he wore this jersey, as they did recycle these sweaters. No labeling is present on the vintage tie-neck, with a few random marks present, along with a number of small holes above and below the numbers on the reverse. A large hole is also present near the left elbow, with some very minor pilling in spots. The programs hail from 1967-68, with Simpson listed as wearing #18 in one example, with both exhibiting heavy wear. Lastly, the modern Drumheller display pictures individual cameos of each player matted, with “1938-39” below. Framed to full dimensions of roughly 14” x 28”, HOFers Max and Doug Bentley are pictured, with an “All-Time Roster” for the club affixed to the reverse.
