Playing his junior hockey as a member of the St. Catherine's Black Hawks and Niagara Falls Flyers of the OHA, winning a Memorial Cup in 1965, Doug Favell would go on to a National Hockey League career that spanned a total of 373 games over the course of twelve (12) years in the league starting with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1967-68. Also suiting up for the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Colorado Rockies before retiring at the end of the 1978-79 season, electing not to join the Edmonton Oilers, who selected him in the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft that June, Favell is regarded as the first goaltender in the NHL to use a painted design on his masks, beginning just before Halloween in 1970. Also having played professional lacrosse in his lifetime as well, being inducted into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2005, offered here is this Colorado Rockies jersey worn by Favell circa 1978. A mesh construction garment made by Champion that features a brand label affixed to the inner collar that displays a size "50" designation and sports no fight strap on the interior, the front of the jersey has been decorated with a screened-on Rockies team crest while matching alternate logo crests have been added over both shoulders in matching style. Accented over the sleeves and verso with Favell's number "1" in dual layer white-over-red screened-on numerals, "Favell" is spelt out in single layer heat-pressed white letters across the affixed blue mesh nameplate that is affixed over the upper reverse. Displaying with excellent game-wear throughout including puck marks over the front, collar and right sleeve, there are also numerous small unrepaired cuts throughout as well including over the front and lower front, a couple of board burn like marks are present over the left sleeve near the cuff while some staining is observed over the top of the left shoulder near the collar. Also displaying some marks and light pilling/fraying on the interior of the jersey, Favell has signed over the "1" on the reverse with a heavily faded blue marker ink signature. A MeiGray Vintage LOA will accompany the piece.
Of note, originally wearing number "33" in 1976-77 and the early portion of 1977-78, Favell started wearing the number "1" during the 1977-78 season at home on October 25th, 1977 vs Boston while continuing to wear "33" on the road until February 12th, 1978 vs the Minnesota North Stars and wearing in a start on the road a week later on February 19th, 1978 vs New York Rangers. Additionally, nobody else is listed as having worn the number "1" during the 1977-78 and 1978-79 seasons except for Favell and the only one listed as having worn number "1" in 1976-77 is Bill McKenzie, who played five (5) games.
