Attending the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union’s Montreal Bulldogs training camp in the early-1940s to stay in shape for his aspiring hockey career, Don Durno was a member of the Toronto RCAF Hurricanes Grey Cup championship squad in 1942 and later joined the Argonauts. Durno would serve as president of the Ontario Junior Football League from 1960-76, and was also the Argo alumni president for 27 years, from 1965-92. After football, Durno organized more than 50 charity golf tournaments, and helped raise over $4 million for the Charlie Conacher Cancer Committee. Obtained directly from his family, we have a late-1940s Toronto Argonauts jersey with use attributed to Durno, in circa 1948 or 1949. A Raydshene label with their Younge Street address remains partially affixed to the collar, with the vintage durene jersey measuring-out across the upper reverse to approx a size 48. Featuring striped sleeves common for the era, “62” in thick white felt is sewn to the chest and verso with a curved-stitch pattern. Earlier CFL jerseys are extremely hard to locate, especially specimens attributed to noteworthy players.
The jersey sports heavy use and wear, with some material loss and fading to the chest and verso numbers, with some of the lower hem torn away. There are also material runs along with a few holes over the sleeves, with single holes over the lower front and reverse.
