Attending the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union’s Montreal Bulldogs training camp in the early-1940s to stay in shape for his aspiring hockey career, Don Durno was a member of the Toronto RCAF Hurricanes Grey Cup championship squad in 1942 and later joined the Argonauts. Durno would serve as president of the Ontario Junior Football League from 1960-76, and was also the Argo alumni president for 27 years, from 1965-92. Obtained directly from his family, we have Durno’s 1942 Toronto RCAF Hurricanes Grey Cup Champions Dow Mug, accompanied by his multi-signed 1950 Western Canadian Finalist Edmonton Eskimos Banquet and Dance program (Durno was a player-coach for Edmonton in 1950, and was named a second team All-Star at tackle for the West). The RCAF silver tankard with glass bottom is 5” in height and sports engraved text of “RCAF Hurricanes – Grey Cup Champions – 1942”, while the football-shaped 6 ½” x 11 ½” fold-over program has been signed by approx 38 on the inner and outer back cover.
Signatures on the program include Peter Lougheed, Harry Hobbs, Frankie Morris, Doug Pyzer, Paul Alford, John Dlugos, Annis Stukus, Doug Brightwell, Ken Moore, Bob Neville, Earl Valiquette, Hank Demur, Brian Dunsworth, Lindy Barry, Mo Bailey, Jim McRae, Mike King and numerous others. The program exhibits moderate wear including creasing, with a vertical fold that runs throughout the entire program. The mug has surface wear throughout along with a dent at the bottom, with some staining and discolouration to the metal and glass within the bottom.
