Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018

A legend in Massachusetts, Dit Clapper spent parts of twenty seasons representing the black and gold, where he also served as team captain for over a dozen of those years. The Boston Bruins played a Kiwanis Club charity game annually during the 1940s, with the contest early in 1947 preceded by a pair of presentations, one for Clapper, who was currently retired and honoured for his recent induction to the Hockey Hall of Fame. We have what might possibly be the award presented by the Kiwanis Club of Ottawa, with an attractive cigar humidor that was given to the legendary star. At roughly 4 ½” in height and with a diameter of just under 5”, the solid brass cigar/tobacco holder was likely fashioned from remaining war munitions, with “To Dit Clapper – From Kiwanis Club of Ottawa – 1946” engraved. Sporting a tight-fitting wooden lid with mounted knob, the humidor sports wear commensurate with it’s age and use, with no unsightly or obtrusive wear/damage.
The information regarding the presentation in Feb of 1947 was taken from an Ottawa Citizen article, with a copy to accompany the humidor, along with a biographical duo tang booklet featuring Clapper. Despite the humidor being dated “1946”, it’s likely that this item is the example that was presented early in 1947, with time needed for both it’s creation along with the engraving.
