Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021

Always sought, durene jerseys represent the vintage game, specifically the early post-expansion years that followed the Original Six era which had previously been dominated by wool sweaters. We offer a scarce Detroit Red Wings specimen from the mid-1970s. A Rawlings label with “50” sizing is affixed to the collar, with the jersey styled with the classic winged-wheel team crest with embroidered detailing. “3” is sewn to the sleeves and verso in single twill, with the garter-style fight strap intact. The jersey shows visible outlines – most prominently on the reverse, that the numbers have been changed, from the previous #2 to the current #3. There is also subtle evidence with a few small loose threads indicating that something was previously sewn to the right breast – possibly an alternate’s “A”, and we should note that Gary Bergman wore the #2 jersey as well as the “A” up until his trade to Minnesota early in 1973-74. The #2 was worn after Bergman's departure in 1973-74 by Mike Korney (2 games) and Al McLeod (26 games), with a number of players wearing the #3 in the mid-1970s including Murray Wing, Jack Lynch, Jim Nahrgang and Larry Giroux.
Additionally, there is also evidence of a former nameplate, possibly an NBC Game of the Week nameplate. We should further note that it is unknown if the jersey was worn by Bergman and if the jersey was recycled for pre-season/training camp use and/or regular season use for any of the other aforementioned players. Sporting great game-use with wear and marks to the material over the lower front and sleeves, there is red paint transfer just above the front band, with heavy board burns on each lower sleeve. Two team repairs are also visible, on the upper reverse and lower left sleeve.
