Heavily outscoring their competition and defeated a mere 13 times throughout the regular season, the Boston Bruins sealed up first place in the East Division at the conclusion of the 1971-72 NHL campaign. Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito would combine for 250 points, with Gerry Cheevers posting a slim 2.50 GAA. The regular season success would continue through the playoffs, with the Beantowners losing only three matches en route to their second Stanley Cup championship in three years. This Prince of Wales trophy was presented to superstar Derek Sanderson for the Bruins’ status as the 1971-72 East Division regular season champions. At 13” in height, four silver-plated hockey sticks rise up from a 2 ½” wooden base to support a cup with an affixed coat of arms and removable lid. A plaque affixed over the front of the wooden base states, “Prince of Wales Trophy”, with “Derek Sanderson” engraved beneath, with a second plaque over the reverse sporting, "NHL Champions – Winners 1971-72 – Boston Bruins". Hailing from his personal collection, a signed LOA from Derek Sanderson will accompany.
Displaying beautifully, there are small areas of surface loss along the rim and to the mounted metal components just above the wooden base, with a few small blemishes to the affixed plaques. The top finial section over the removable lid is just slightly bent, and it should be noted that two of the legs have broken at the base and are slightly misaligned. There is also some wax residue within the interior bowl.
