Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2020
One of very few goaltenders throughout the history of the game to captain his squad, Percivale St-Helier LeSueur backstopped the fabled Ottawa Silver Seven for nearly a decade, and was the first netminder to regularly venture from his crease to chase loose pucks. The early Stanley Cup champion was also instrumental in the development of the modern goal net. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have an especially rare vintage photo signed by the early superstar during his broadcast and journalism days post-career. At approx 3 ½” x 5” and picturing LeSueur behind the microphone, the small sepia-toned image has been signed above, with a personalization to Hamlyn and the date of “1947” added. Described by Newsy Lalonde as "one of the best goalies I ever faced", LeSueur would pass in 1962 shortly after being enshrined in the HOF.
The signature displays beautifully, with a minor rub to the “e” of “Percy”. The photo itself shows toning, with some paper residue on the reverse from prior scrapbook mounting.
