Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 12/3/2024
Forming the Pacific Coast Hockey Association in British Columbia with his brother Frank in 1911, Lester Patrick served as player, owner, manager and coach of the Victoria Senators, with the club renamed the Aristocrats in 1913. With the PCHA merging with the Western Canada Hockey League in 1925, to form the Western Hockey League, Patrick played one season with the Stanley Cup-finalist Victoria Cougars before being offered the position of coach with the newly-formed New York Rangers, in October of 1926. One of the earliest signatures you'll ever find of The Silver Fox, this handwritten letter was signed while player-coach of the Cougars, during the 1926 Stanley Cup finals! Dated March 31, 1926, the Cougars lost the first game of the finals to the Montreal Maroons the day before, on March 30th, with Game 2 played the day following the letter, on April 1st. At 6" x 9 1/2" and on Montreal's Windsor Hotel letterhead (all four games of the series were played at the Montreal Forum), the letter states "Received five hundred dollars cash on account of travelling expenses from Victoria BC, Lester Patrick" Written and signed in black fountain pen ink, the signature remains completely dark, with a small area of smudging/bleeding. Sporting holes from former binder insertion along with a pair of fold lines, the letter is in beautiful displayable condition. A true piece of hockey history, the signature of one of the sport's all-time greatest innovators and executives combined with the fact that it was penned for Stanley Cup expenses during the 1926 finals is extraordinary.
