Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
One of the game's tremendously important all-time players, with his status as the first black player to break the MLB's colour barrier, Jackie Robinson remains one of the most beloved figures to ever swing a bat. First winning the inaugural Rookie of the Year Award in 1947, Robinson would go on to earn 6 all-star berths, an MVP award and an NL batting championship while leading the Brooklyn Dodgers to the club's only World Series championship, in 1955. A staple in the Dodgers line-up for a pair of seasons entering the 1949 MLB season, coming off of a year that saw the Dodgers finish with the record of 84-70, the Dodgers would improve to a record of 97-57 in 1949 to win the National League pennant and set up a World Series meetup with the New York Yankees. The finest year of Jackie's career overall, he finished the year with career and league-high totals in both stolen bases (37) and batting average (.342). Those numbers, together with his 16 home runs and 124 RBI, earned him the National League MVP Award at season's end. Offered here, we present this framed display that features a post card signed by Jackie Robinson. A government post card dated March 29th, 1949 that was penned by Robinson and sent to his friend/neighbor Sidney Kranes in Brooklyn, New York, the post card speaks of how Spring Training was almost completed and that Jackie, Rachel and Jack Jr. would soon be headed back to Brooklyn to open the new season. Signed "Sincerely, Jackie Robinson", with the fountain ink used to write out the card having oxidized over the years, the writing and signature both remain legible despite this. Measuring out to roughly 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", the card itself is found to be in overall good condition but shows toning, stains and creases throughout. Framed to full dimensions of 21 1/2" x 15 3/4" with the frame clear/see through, a gold coloured plaque is found underneath the postcard, detailing what was written by Robinson, while a JSA LOA for the signature is seen at the right side of the display. With the entirety of the display in overall excellent condition, an additional copy of the JSA LOA will accompany the piece.
