Considered by many to be the greatest Toronto Maple Leaf of all time, Dave Keon first appeared in blue and white in 1960, winning the celebrated Calder as the league’s freshest face for his inaugural season efforts, with an impressive 45 points in 70 games played. Lord Stanley’s hardware would be awarded to Keon and his Leafs following the HOFer’s second, third and fourth seasons, with All-Star appearance in each of those years. With the 1960s evolving into the ‘70s, Keon would spend a lengthy 15 seasons under the maple leaf, captaining the world famous club for a considerable amount of his tenure. The Rouyn-Noranda native would finish his impressive career fourth on the Leafs list for All-Time Games Played, and third for All-Time Points.
This Toronto Maple Leafs sweater was worn by the HOF superstar in 1963-64, a Stanley Cup championship season, and amazingly, it’s been photo-matched. A label from MLG supplier Doug Laurie sits partially affixed on the inside seam near a laundering tag, with the collar void of any labeling. Styled with a vintage partially embroidered Leafs team crest, the solid-white knit has been accented with tackle twill sleeve and verso numbers, with dual sleeve and lower front striping bands. Six eyelet configuration has also been utilized, on tie-neck construction.
Game-wear on the important sweater includes a few dark marks on the front section, along with a large stick mark beneath the right shoulder, with additional examples over each sleeve. A pair of team repairs are also present, situated over the left elbow. The crest, along with the sleeve and verso numbers have faded over time, most likely from repeated washes due to consistent use. We should also note that this scarce style matches uniforms worn by Toronto in 1963-64 and 1964-65 according to photographic research, with the type of gloves shown on our photographic matches worn by the team in 1963-64, and not in 1964-65, helping date the jersey as most likely worn during the Leafs 1963-64 Stanley Cup Championship season. Regarding the previously mentioned photo-match, an included numeric image has been matched to the exact alignment of the team crest with the collar, as well as to specific embroidered details on the team crest. Please take note that this item may be subject to a silent reserve. Comes with an LOA from Classic Auctions.
