Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/30/2021
Joining once again, in collaboration with the Montreal Canadiens, Classic Auctions is pleased to offer a large collection of artifacts and memorabilia from the storied club's comprehensive archives. A number of historic specimens direct from the famous team including unique displays that were once marvelously displayed in the hallowed Montreal Forum and later at the Bell Centre are available, with an endless array of legendary and monumental players featured that all proudly once donned the sacred jersey of the mighty Montreal Canadiens.
With a promising hockey career cut short due to an eye injury, Claude Ruel began coaching the Montreal Junior Canadiens in the early-1960s before serving as a scout with the parent club and eventual director of player development. Replacing longtime skipper Toe Blake in 1968, Ruel would lead the Habs from behind the bench, a position he held for two seasons. His services would again be solicited in the late-1970s, coaching the Canadiens for the 1979-80 and 1980-81 NHL seasons. Originally displayed at the hallowed Montreal Forum and most likely later at the Bell Centre, we have a framed painting of Claude Ruel by noted Habs artist Michel Lapensee. At approx 11” x 15” and executed in water colours, Ruel is masterly depicted, with his name and tenure listed on the matte. The artist has signed, adding the date (1992), with the work double-matted and framed to approx 19” x 23”. The unique painting is flawless, with some damage to the text on the matte and light wear to the frame including a few blemishes. An LOA from Classic Auctions will be included.
