Hockey Memorabilia Auction - Spring 2008

The New York Islanders became the first U.S.-based team to win four consecutive Stanley Cups, and only the third team ever to win four in a row, when they swept the upstart Edmonton Oilers in the spring of 1983, with miniature Cups like this produced to mark the historic occasion. Thirteen-inch high silver-plated beauty was presented to veteran Clark Gillies who has been quoted as saying “We had size, speed and enough sharpshooters to keep the opposition off-balance.” After a 96-point regular season that saw Mike Bossy rifle 60 goals, the Islanders beat the Capitals 3-games-to-1 before eliminating the Rangers and Bruins in six games, setting up their showdown with the high-scoring Oilers. Backed by Conn Smythe Trophy-winner Billy Smith, the Isles held Gretzky and company to just six goals in a four-game sweep, Smith recording a 2-0 shutout in Game 1 and performing minor miracles in the clinching 4-2 victory at Nassau Coliseum. Bossy’s first period marker, New York’s third in a 1:37 span, stood up as the Cup-winner and yet another Stanley Cup celebration ensued on Long Island! The names of team captain Potvin, Bossy, Trottier, Gillies, Goring, Tonelli, Bourne, Kallur, Jonsson, Morrow, Nystrom, Sutter and others are engraved on the barrel of the trophy, with those of GM Torrey and coach Arbour among those inscribed above. The top (bowl) of the delectable display piece has been professionally replaced, with the rest featuring light tarnish. The green felt that lines the bottom of the wooden base has been autographed by Hall-of-Famer Clark Gillies who will also sign an LOA to be included. Like the Islanders of the day, superb!
