Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction April 2024

A Canadian junior hockey hotbed for a total of twenty-three (23) seasons from 1971-72 to 1993-94, the Victoria Cougars would win the WHL championship for the 1980-81 season with a roster that included future NHLers such as Grant Fuhr, Barry Pederson and Bob McGill. Offered here, and hailing from circa-1981, is this Victoria Cougars game-worn jersey. A mostly mesh construction offering made by Athletic Knit that dates from either the 1981-82 or 1982-83 seasons of play based on photographic evidence of Cougars players during those seasons, a brand label displaying a size "XL" designation is affixed to the inner collar. Missing its original lace that was once fed through the eyelets of the collar, the front of the jersey is decorated with a Cougars team crest that features printed details, the sleeves and verso have had the #28 sewn to them in dual layer tackle twill numerals, with the "8" on the reverse signed over the top by Russ Courtnall, who played for the Cougars during the 1982-83 and 1983-84 seasons, with a blue marker ink signature that displays without issue. Of note, we DO NOT believe this jersey to have been worn by Courtnall himself. Research shows that the number "28" was worn by John Mokosak in 1980-81 and he did play with Victoria the two (2) years this style of jersey was used though it is unconfirmed if he switched numbers or not as he is seen on his 1981-82 team issued card wearing the number "5" for reference. Void of a fight strap on the interior and displaying good game-wear, stick marks, board burns and coloured paint transfer marks are observed over the front, reverse and both sleeves with some small unrepaired cuts and holes observed in the thin mesh of the body and sleeves as well. Additionally, staining is found throughout the sleeves, shoulders and hem line. Overall, a cool survivor from a bygone era of junior hockey!
