Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/7/2017
Presented, we have a rare antique Spalding puck in its original box – definitely one of the most sought after pucks in the hobby! This intriguing one dates from 1909 to 1915, with the box being an updated version of the first ever Spalding, produced between 1900 and 1909. The puck has a Spalding logo marked on the side of the slug. Although the box reads "Officially adopted by the Canadian Amateur Hockey League", it is believed that it was issued shortly after the demise of the CAHL and covers the period just prior to the creation of the NHL. Thus, teams in the National Hockey Association which included the Montreal Canadiens and Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Quebec Bulldogs and Toronto Blueshirts, would have used pucks like this one and who knows, possibly this exact example!
The puck is in chip-free, slice-free condition with just some type of filmy white residue covering it. We believe this could be removed but would leave that to the discretion of the winning bidder. The two piece box would grade "good"; the top remains solid and intact, although there are cracks at three of the four edges with some spotting, two of them only noticeable upon close inspection. The paper label on top displays well with just a little paper loss in the upper left corner. The sides of the box are red, with the label on the front side showing considerable paper loss. The bottom of the box is solid with a one inch slit along one of the edges.
