Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

Making NHL history by starring on the league’s first all-brother line, Max and Doug Bentley both spent numerous seasons in The Windy City with the Black Hawks before the Second World War, with each also skating for their hometown Saskatoon Quakers post-NHL. Originating from the incomparable autograph collection of E. Robert Hamlyn, we have a letter signed by Doug Bentley accompanied by a photo signed by Max Bentley. First, the single-page 5” x 8” letter is dated “March 6th/1945”, with Bentley referencing a photo sent by Hamlyn. Signed in dark ink, the signature displays well, slightly encroached upon by “Sincerely”. The 8” x 10” photo pictures Max in his Black Hawks uniform, with his blue ink signature presenting wonderfully. Enshrined just two years apart in the mid-1960s, Doug sadly departed in 1972, while Max left us in 1984.
The letter exhibits toning, with a notation over the reverse from Hamlyn stating he received the letter back signed on “Nov 24/45”. There are also holes punched along the top section to facilitate binder insertion. The photo shows surface wear with a few large wrinkles and minor corner creases, with biographical text typed over the reverse. There is also a notation from Hamlyn stating he received the photo back signed in 1947.
