Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Finally elected to the House of Commons in 1940 after numerous contested elections following his criminal defense law career and time serving in World War I, John Diefenbaker entered the office of the Prime Minister in 1957 as the only Progressive Conservative party leader for half a century, and left in 1963, becoming the Opposition Leader. We present a typed letter and photo both signed by the World War I Canadian Expeditionary Force Lieutenant. The letter is dated October 11, 1958 and on Office of the Prime Minister letterhead, addressed to a Miss Walls. The text refers to the "appointment of a woman Senator from Saskatchewan". Signed in black ink in his unmistakable style, there is a pair of fold lines to the letter from mailing, with the original envelope included. The photo is approx 8" x 10" and it pictures Diefenbaker at his desk with small dog, signed in black ink along the base with a personalization to his personal aide Michael McCafferty. A Classic Auctions LOA will accompany.
