Hailing from the glory days of the big, bad Bruins, we have a Boston jersey that originates from the 1975-77 time period, with use attributed to Ken Hodge and Peter McNab. Produced by Champion with their label affixed to the collar with “48” sizing, the classic Bruins team crest in layered tackle twill has been utilized, with “8” sewn to the sleeves and verso along with matching alternate crests over each shoulder. There is also a garter-style fight strap. Champion jerseys were first used by the Bruins during the 1975-76 training camp, and were also used during the 1975-76 playoffs, 1976-77 regular season/playoffs and 1977-78 training camp. This jersey is attributed to have been worn by Ken Hodge in the 1975-76 training camp and 1975-76 playoffs and attributed to have been worn by Peter McNab in the 1976-77 regular season and playoffs, including the final two games of the Stanley Cup Finals series in Boston, and in the 1977-78 training camp.
We should note evidence of a former nameplate (with repairs visible), with this positioned where nameplates were added for TV games and later removed, with no signs of alterations to the alternate shoulder patches, team crest or sleeve and verso numbers. The sleeves have also been shortened. It should be further noted that this set of jersey were used by the Bruins in different capacities until circa 1981. Sporting heavy wear to the material throughout, there are approx 24 team repairs, with examples situated on the front (5), reverse (7), shoulders (1) and sleeves (11). Regarding the use of Champion jerseys and labeling, it was Champion during the 1975-76 training camp, Wilson during pre-season games (Champion could have been used as well). Wilson with Bicentennial patch during the 1975-76 regular season, and Wilson and Champion during the 1975-76 playoffs, and then Wilson during 1976-77 training camp and pre-season games (Champion could have been used as well). Bruins open at home with Champion, then switch off back and forth between Wilson and Champion into October before Champion takes over totally. Stall & Dean takes over around January or February. Champion road goes bye bye totally, but Champion home comes back for three special regular-season games with nameplates, and is used along with Stall & Dean throughout the playoffs, including the final two games of the SCF series in Boston. Champion is used in the 1977-78 training camp (George Plimpton wears a Cheevers No. 30 while skating with Seaweed Pettie during camp in his book Open Net). Champion is never again worn in a game after the 1977 playoffs, but hang around to be used in different capacities through at least the 1981 training camp.
