Supported by arguably the most passionate hockey fans found south of the border, the Boston Bruins are the oldest American team in the NHL, with six Stanley Cup championships won throughout their near century of existence. Beginning from the height of the Original Six era in the glorious 1950s, we have a postcard (54) and team-issued photo (28) collection totaling 82 and ranging from the early-1950s to the late-1960s. Included, we have 15 black and white postcards from the early-1950s, 26 black and white postcards from the mid-to-late-1950s, 18 blue tint team-issued photos (6” x 7”) from 1957-58 (most exhibit just light wear), 10 team-issued photos (6 ½” x 8”) from 1958-60 (most have tape staining, with a few thinner paper stock, with some of the facsimile signatures gone over), 11 JD McCarthy postcards from 1966-67 and 2 JD McCarthy postcards from 1968-70. There are also yearbooks for 1946-47 and 1947-48, along with a 1974 playoffs program.
The 15 black and white postcards from the early-1950s include Dumart, Schmidt, Labine, Klukay, Mackell, Lund and others, The 26 black and white postcards from the mid-to-late-1950s include Mohns, Gendron, Stanley, Morrison, Reibel, Toppazzini, Schmidt, Boivin and others, the 18 blue tint team-issued photos (6” x 7”) from 1957-58 include Schmidt, Stanley, Bucyk, Horvath, Mohns, Boivin, Flaman, Stasiuk, Simmons and others (most exhibit just light wear), the 10 team-issued photos (6 ½” x 8”) from 1958-60 include Boivin, Lumley, Labine (2), Mohns, Mackell and others, the 11 JD McCarthy postcards from 1966-67 include Marotte, Watson, Hebenton, O’Ree, Stewart (2) and others, while the 2 JD McCarthy postcards from 1968-70 are both Jim Lorentz. The majority of the postcards in the collection show light to moderate wear, with toning a concern along with the odd crease or dinged corner. This is a nicer ensemble of these scarce 1950s postcards than we usually encounter. The yearbooks both exhibit toning to the covers and interior pages, with just light overall handling wear.
