Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2020

One of the first NHL contracts to be negotiated by an agent, Bobby Orr’s initial agreement made him the highest paid player in history, with his second contract the first million-dollar salary in pro hockey. We have an especially important stick that originates from early-on in Orr’s inaugural NHL season (Fall of 1966), with this dating confirmed by photographic evidence by way of a rookie season photo along with a second image taken during training camp, where Orr wore #27. A Northland Custom Pro Glass Fused model, “Orr” has been handwritten in marker, with a second name boxed out in black marker. The stick retains the original white-over-black tape - with an added black tape knob at the base - over the handle/knob, with this early style matching the training camp photo. The original tape is in place over the blade, with tape added to rectify the broken blade at some point (separated at the heel), with this tape now removed leaving just residue. The V-shaped strand on the original tape job near the toe, along with the blacked out name with Orr handwritten over the shaft, both perfectly match the accompanying rookie season photo.
Seeing action during the first few months Orr was with the Bruins, the stick exhibits nice use with marks to the aforementioned broken blade, with a few additional marks to the lower shaft including just a couple small spots of red paint transfer. The knob also shows discolouration from both use and age. We should further note that a small piece of wood along the shaft where the blade broke is missing.
