Beginning his career in Oshawa as a Junior at 14, Bobby Orr would be an All-Star three of his four seasons with the Generals, making the transition to Boston in the fall of 1966 as an 18 year old. We have a stick that arguably serves as one of the best pre-NHL examples in the entire hobby, with this photo-matched lumber used by Orr during his final season in Ontario in 1965-66 before emerging onto the Bruins – and the world’s - stage. A Victoriaville Glasfused Supreme 20 model, “Orr” has been handwritten over the upper shaft, with only some of the lower striping accent intact. The original unique white-over-black tape remains on the handle/knob with the butt end sticking out – clearly matched in style to Getty Image #502491823 from Sept 16th 1966 – with the original tape over the blade covering 2/3 towards the toe section, with this again matching an image of Orr while with the Generals. An included numeric image of Bobby with brother Ron from 1965 shows both the handwritten “Orr” along with the “5 LEFT” stamp, with an image of our stick superimposed over the numeric image, showing identical placement. One of the greatest sticks from one of the all-time greatest players, this example could serve as the centerpiece in the world’s best Bobby Orr collection.
Heavy use is exhibited on the desirable thought-provoking lumber, with marks covering both sides of the blade and lower shaft, with additional marks and wear throughout the length of the stick. There is also a bit of loss along the top of the blade at the toe section along with a fine crack, with the stick remaining completely solid.
With a record eight consecutive Norris Trophies as the NHL's premier defenceman and three consecutive Hart Trophies as the league's most valuable player, Bobby Orr continues to be regarded as the greatest defenceman the game has ever seen.
