Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2019
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2019
Sensational one-of-a-kind trophy commemorates Bobby Orr’s first season in the National Hockey League, one which saw the teenager live up to all advanced billing. At season’s end, Orr was an obvious choice for rookie of the year and was awarded the Calder Trophy, along with being named to the NHL’s 2nd All-Star Team. This miniature Calder was produced in 1972 and given to Alan Eagleson, the Toronto lawyer who had negotiated Orr’s first contract and who became best of friends with the superstar. Eagleson relates how Graham was the owner and president of Ostranders Jewelers and who Eagleson and Orr dealt with in Bobby’s first big endorsement deal, the Bobby Orr watch. The relationship led to Graham, who had close contacts at Birks, wanting to have trophies produced and given to Eagleson. Permission was needed and obtained from NHL President Clarence Campbell to produce the replicas, with the results magnificent. A signed LOA from Alan Eagleson will accompany.
A silver-plated footed and three-handled mug brings the height of the trophy to just over 12”, with engraving on the cup reading “Calder Memorial Trophy – To Be Awarded To The Player Selected As The Most Proficient In His First Year of Competition In The National Hockey League”. An engraved metal plaque on the 5” high wooden base reads “1967 Winner – Bobby Orr – Presented to Alan Eagleson by George Graham – “Ostranders” – December 1972”. Preserved in beautiful condition and still in its original Peterson & Sons Silversmith blue pouch and maroon box, the trophy exhibits some surface wear, especially over the lower section and inner rim, with a bit of surface loss over one of the handles. There is also a small blemish near the plaque, with the trophy currently able to swivel on the base.
