While Wayne Gretzky is continually touted as the sole catalyst of the NHL’s expansion into the larger US market, proper acknowledgement must first be made for the man who instantly brought legitimacy to future NHL clubs with the signing of his famous million dollar WHA contract, Bobby Hull. The inaugural WHA season would witness the Jets and Hull atop the Western Division at its conclusion, falling in the first Avco Cup Final to the New England Whalers 4 games to 1.
From the first ground breaking WHA season in 1972-73, we have a “West All-Star” jersey worn by the league’s top superstar Bobby Hull. Labeling from supplier Gerry Cosby along with a size “48” partially detached flag tag remain affixed to the collar, with intact laundering instructions placed beneath. Styled with a rubberized WHA team crest along with sleeve and lower front striping bands, the blue mesh V-neck has been accented with tackle twill numbers and letters, along with three stars that appear arching over the team crest. A number of the rubberized stars and striping bands exhibit wear, while the team crest remains solid and vibrant. A sticky black substance is also present on the sweater, with a few small spots present on the front just beneath the left shoulder. The 1972-73 WHA All-Star Game was played in Quebec City on Jan 6th, with the West losing to the East 6-2. Hull was responsible for the West’s second goal, scored early in the third period.
