Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2015

While the Alberta/Edmonton Oilers never won an AVCO World Trophy during the World Hockey Association's seven-year existence from 1972-79, there is no doubt that the original WHA franchise went on to become the most successful team ever produced by the rebel league. Defenseman Bob Wall wore this white away gamer from the league's inaugural 1972-73 season that may have seen action in the very first WHA game between Alberta and the Ottawa Nationals, a 7-4 win by the Oilers at the Ottawa Civic Centre on October 11, 1972. The familiar Oilers crest sewn on the front features blue and orange chain-stitch embroidery on a white cotton circle patch. "WALL" is spelled out in orange chain-stitch letters outlined by blue sewn onto the correct cloth nameplate (we also note signs of a larger nameplate that maybe have been added and removed). The Western Athletic tagging is there in the hem, something you will only find on jerseys from the inaugural season. This one shows good wear and washing with a few team repairs and a pair of solid board burns. The shoulder numbers have held up nicely but the back number has areas that have worn through to the backing layer beneath. This is a great opportunity to acquire a gamer from the first and only season of the Alberta Oilers, who re-branded themselves as the Edmonton Oilers and ultimately went on to win five Stanley Cups in their first 11 seasons after joining the NHL in 1979.
