Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction Spring 2025
Captain Bob Gainey would contribute 10 post-season points in just 20 games to help the Montreal Canadiens claim the 1986 Stanley Cup championship, and under his leadership, the club would again advance to the finals, in 1989. This Prince of Wales trophy was presented to Gainey for the Canadiens’ status as the 1986 Wales Conference playoffs champions. At 13” in height, four silver-plated hockey sticks rise up from a 2 ½” wooden base to support a cup with an affixed coat of arms and removable lid. A plaque affixed over the front of the wooden base states, “Prince of Wales Trophy”, with “Robert Gainey” engraved beneath, with a second plaque over the reverse sporting, "NHL Champions – Montreal Canadiens – 1985-86". There is some even tarnishing throughout and wear to the surface in spots, with a few minor blemishes to the reverse plaque. There is also a bit of spotting near the affixed Prince of Wales coat of arms, and we should note that the finial atop the lid remains in wonderful condition, with these usually somewhat bent. Originating from his personal collection, a signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany.
