Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2020

Their first Stanley Cup victory on home ice since 1968, the Montreal Canadiens would secure their fourth-consecutive championship in 1978-79, with Bob Gainey’s point-a-game performance throughout the post-season more than enough to earn the impressive Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. This Prince of Wales trophy was presented to Gainey for the Canadiens’ status as the 1979 Wales Conference regular season champions. At 13” in height, four silver-plated hockey sticks rise up from a 2 ½” wooden base to support a cup with an affixed coat of arms and removable lid. A plaque affixed over the front of the wooden base states, “Prince of Wales Trophy”, with “Robert Gainey” engraved beneath, with a second plaque over the reverse sporting, "NHL Champions – Montreal Canadiens – 1978-79". Hailing from his personal collection, a signed LOA from Bob Gainey will accompany.
Capping off his second Frank J. Selke Trophy win this season, Gainey is the only player in history to win the coveted award four consecutive times. Regarding the trophy’s condition, there is some light even tarnishing throughout, with a bit of surface wear in areas. A piece of masking tape with “2F” handwritten has also been added to the underside.
