The benefactor of the most recognizable trophy in sport, Lord Stanley is commemorated with these four items issued by the Preston Guild in 1902. The brown sepia-coloured plate is 9 1/2” in diameter and states “Earl Derby K.G. Guild Mayor” beneath Stanley’s image, while “Sept 1902 Preston Guild” appears on a banner above. The cup is 4” in height with a banner and image for the Preston guild with “1902”, along with a portrait image of Stanley with “Earl Derby”. The large bronze presentation medal is 2” in diameter and it depicts Stanley and his wife on one side, encircled by "The Earl of Derby K.G. Guild Mayor of Preston and The Countess of Derby”.
The ceramic plate has scalloped edging and gold coloured trim and exhibits wear from age and possible use with the gold along the rim mostly worn away, with just some minor crazing over the reverse.
The cup retains most of it’s gilding, with both images clean, with just a few blemishes present along with a bit or residue in a small area along the side of the rim, with this removable if so desired by the winning bidder. There is also a very small chip along the base, with the underside stamped “Preston” within a small designed logo.
The large bronze presentation medal exhibits moderate surface wear, with the raised images all sharp and well defined, with just surface patina present.
The smaller 1 ¼” medal with attached blue ribbon features a raised image for the Preston Guild with “1902”, with an image of Stanley over the reverse and remains fairly clean with its original silver surface, with just a few scratches and minor handling wear, with the attached ribbon and pin back showing light wear with no fraying.
