Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2016

A member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame, Albert “Abbie” Coo also served as a Captain in France during the Great War with the 27th Winnipeg Battalion, as well as putting almost three decades into journalism as a news editor. This hockey-themed clock was presented to Coo by “His Friends in Sports” during a dinner in 1958. Produced by German maker Mauthe, the almost 9” x 25” mantle-style clock features a beautiful wood finish with gold coloured accents. With a skate blade and shoe mounted to each side, there is also a vintage puck with added plate containing Coo’s initials. Affixed plaques on both sides list the particulars including its location and presentation date of May 3rd 1958, at the historic Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg. The clock remains in very good condition, with expected wear present on the clock face and along some edges. There is also additional wear from the cleats on the mounted shoe rubbing against the base. The original winding key is also included. Figural display pieces of this kind regarding hockey rarely surface, and this is an interesting and unique example.
