Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction October 2016
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 11/9/2016
Known by a number of different team names throughout their history, the Springfield Indians of the American Hockey League began life in 1926, with the current incarnation known as the Utica Comets. Originating from the collection of Eddie Shore, this Indians game-worn jersey saw action from mid-January through to the end of the Calder Cup Finals in 1975, with this short-lived style not often seen. Champion size tagging sits along the collar, with all identifiers heat-pressed on, including the team crest, numbers and striping bands. Featuring a solid white Chief’s head with miniature-sized body, the jersey is accented with red and white sleeve striping bands along with a solid red lower band. An LOA from Classic will accompany.
Sporting shortened sleeves, game-wear on the vintage garment includes some marks on the lower front, along with board burns with a few small resulting holes over each elbow section. There are also three team repairs present, with one on the lower back hem, one on the right shoulder along with the final example on the lower left sleeve.
The Springfield Indians changed their name to the Kings in 1968 when the franchise became part of the L.A. Kings fold, and even changed the colors to purple and gold like their parent team. But in ’74-75, Eddie Shore once again took full control, changed the name back to the Indians, went back to the original blue, white, and red uniforms for the season, and captured the club’s fifth Calder Cup. Truly an awesome game-worn jersey from a tremendously important chapter in Springfield hockey.
