This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/8/2017
Relating the tale of his life in hockey as a managerial wunderkind, Frank J Selke – along with writer Gordon Green, published “Behind the Cheering” in 1962. Presented is a copy of the interesting work signed by 22 different Montreal Canadiens (32 total signatures are present, with some duplication) circa-1962. At roughly 6 ¼” x 9 ¼”, the 191 page hardcover features an image of Selke on the intact dust jacket, with Richard pictured in game action with the Bruins. 21 signatures are present on the title page, with an additional 11 signatures on the endpaper. All scripted in ballpoint, highlights include Beliveau HOF (D. 2014), Plante HOF (D. 1986), Moore HOF (D. 2015), Geoffrion HOF (D. 2006) and Henri Richard HOF.
Along with the aforementioned players, the full list of signers includes Tom Johnson HOF (D. 2007), Phil Goyette, Jean Gauthier (2), Bob Rousseau (2), Ralph Backstrom (2), Gilles Tremblay (2 – D. 2014), Jean-Guy Talbot (2), Bill Hicke (2 – D. 2005), Toe Blake HOF (D. 1995), Don Marshall (2), Cesare Maniago, J C Tremblay (2 – D. 1994), Kenny Reardon HOF (D. 2008), Claude Provost (2 – D. 1984) and Lou Fontinato (2 – D. 2016). The majority of the signatures survive in beautiful condition with no fading or loss. We should note that the Henri Richard, Gilles Tremblay and JC Tremblay signatures on the title page (each has also signed on the endpaper) were first scripted in pencil, and then gone over in ballpoint. The book itself exhibits light wear, with heavy creasing, tears and toning to the dust jacket.
