Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
A member of the fabled Montreal Crystals and Montreal Shamrocks squads in the 1890s, William Dobby headed the New York in 1897 and joined the Brooklyn Crescents of the American Amateur Hockey League. He would star with the team throughout most of their existence for a total of 15 seasons, with his amazing 190 points in just 90 games assisting the Crescents to a league-leading nine championship titles. We have a few items that originate from his personal collection. First, there is a small match safe with enamel Crescents logo and "1902", with a monogram on the reverse, followed by a small gold-coloured medallion with enamel Crescents emblem and "CAC" beneath (stands for "Crescents Athletic Club", the organization the team was associated with). Next, there is a metal circular badge with "Crescents Athletic Club" enameled, with this meant to be mounted (3 1/4"), and lastly, there is a leather wallet with "WD" in affixed letters on the front with the interior showing "From the Princeton Hockey Team 1909" in gilt lettering (there is some minor age wear to the wallet but it appears unused). Items associated with noteworthy early clubs rarely surface, making this collection a must for any antique hockey collector.
