Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Just the second season the Montreal Canadiens presented players with this award, we have Wayne Thomas' 1973-74 Molson Cup Trophy. Awarded by each NHL Canadian team to the player receiving the most three-star selections throughout the NHL season, Ken Dryden was the first Habs winner in 1972-73, with Thomas winning in 1973-74 before a string of six consecutive wins by superstar Guy Lafleur. One highlight from the season was the March 10, 1974 game, where Thomas set a Canadiens record with 53 saves in a 5–4 victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins; the record has since been tied by Carey Price. At approx 10" in height, a trophy bowl with black base is mounted over a slant-sided wooden base, with a plaque affixed to the front with "Coupe Molson Cup 1973-74 Wayne Thomas 58 Points" engraved. There are also stars mounted to each side. The bowl shows heavy oxidation and it is loose and able to swivel on the base, with no issues for the base. This is an absolutely splendid display piece.
