Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction September 2024
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 9/24/2024
The greatest player to ever grace the ice of the National Hockey League and still holding a total of 58 records set by him during his career even 24 seasons after he retired from the game, Wayne Gretzky would never be far away from the arena in the early portion of his retirement, becoming a part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes before becoming head coach in 2005 (a role he would remain in until 2009) and leading Team Canada to gold medals at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games and 2004 World Cup of Hockey. Hailing from the era of the early-to-mid-2000s, circa 2003 or 2004, offered here is this stick used by Wayne during on-ice activities that has also been signed by the man affectionately known as "The Great One". A TPS Response Plus model twig with "Gretzky 99" factory graphics over the upper shaft, the stick retains Wayne's familiar black gripper over the handle and knob while the black blade tape that was once in place has been removed to facilitate Gretzky's large and flowing silver marker ink signature that displays well on the forehand side with some minor fading/smudging in the middle of "Wayne". The same model of stick used by Wayne on-ice at the 2003 Heritage Classic and in practice sessions with Team Canada at the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, the stick shows excellent evidence of use via numerous marks over the blade, heel and shaft.
Hailing from the personal collection of Wayne's former teammate and longtime friend, Willy Lindstrom, his signed LOA will accompany the piece.
