Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Reunited with Mark Messier and helping to lead the New York Rangers to the Conference Finals, Wayne Gretzky would score a team-leading 20 postseason points in just 15 games in 1996-97, his first season in Manhattan with the Blueshirts and the final stop in his storied NHL career. Offered here, is this stick used by Gretzky during the 1996-97 season. An Easton Silver Tip model with "Gretzky" factory graphics over the shaft as well as "105 X-Stiff", the stick retains Wayne’s familiar “Jack the Gripper” over the handle/knob. Sporting a blade that has been inserted into the shaft and has “Gretzky” stamped onto the stem, Wayne's original black tape job has been removed to facilitate "The Great Ones" signature which has been penned to the forehand side in flowing black marker ink that displays without issue. A highly desirable twig, the stick shows game-use via numerous dark marks over the blade stem and heel on both sides as well as few small chips to the graphics on the shaft. Finally, residue from the once applied tape job is observed over both sides of the blade.
