Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
One of the charter franchises of the National Hockey League and a staple in the league since its inception in 1917, the Toronto Maple Leafs, originally known as the Arenas and the St. Patricks before Conn Smythe settled on their current moniker, have won a total of thirteen (13) Stanley Cups during their history and have retired the use of thirteen (13) numbers in honour of nineteen (19) former players. Boasting a total of sixty-four (64) honored members in the hallowed halls of the Hockey Hall of Fame, the most of any franchise, offered here is this collection of Maple Leafs memorabilia that dates from the 1960s and 1970s. Including a trio of Maple Leafs Christmas cards from 1966-67, 1976-77 and 1978-79, the most recent of the three (3) examples has been signed by controversial Maple Leafs boss Harold Ballard on the inside with a red ink signature that displays without issue. All sporting team photos and rosters on their interiors, all three (3) are found to be in overall good condition while showing some handling wear, with the 1978-79 example showing a small amount of paper loss on the inside at the top edge of the team photo and a larger amount on the reverse. Also including a "personal note" sent out by Ballard in celebration of the Maple Leafs 50th anniversary which measures 5 1/2" x 8 1/4" and shows some creasing plus paper loss on the reverse, the note is joined by a pair of Ballard's business cards, one (1) that shows him over the front in a Maple Leafs jersey which is in overall good condition despite some edge wear and creasing while the other shows him artistically done up in the uniform of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which has paper loss on the reverse, creasing and evidence of liquid staining on the interior. For the final items, including a vintage 1910's hockey team postcard (light edge and corner wear plus some creasing throughout and light toning), a Maple Leaf Gardens program from Toronto's contest on February 21st, 1968 against the Pittsburgh Penguins (unscored - good condition with light handling and surface wear to the covers) and a promotional card celebrating the 1966-67 Stanley Cup champion Maple Leafs that sports a black and white team photo, an image of the Stanley Cup and a roster list (minor creasing and surface wear plus a pen mark over the right edge) all the items hail from the collection/estate of former Toronto Hockey League President T.P. Topping.
