Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
The youngest winner of the Vezina Trophy for best goaltender as an 18-year-old rookie in 1984, Tom Barasso is the also youngest NHL netminder to ever be awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy. The Boston native backstopped the Pittsburgh Penguins to a pair of consecutive Stanley Cup championships, in 1991 and 1992. A veteran of 777 National Hockey League games for Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Carolina, Toronto and St. Louis who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2023, offered here is this pair of goalie skates worn by Barrasso as a member of the Penguins in the era of the early-to-mid-1990s. Bauer 2000 model skates that retain their original steel blades, insoles and laces, "Barrasso" is penned over the bottom of both cowlings in black marker ink that displays well. Showing some rusting to the blades themselves, the cowlings show numerous puck marks, scuffs, abrasions and spots of red post paint transfers while the leather around the top of each boot is cracking due to age. Of note, Barrasso's 1991-92 Bowman card appears to show similar wear patterns on the outside of the right skate to what is seen on the skates being offered but the image is not clear enough to call a photo-match. Accompanied by a Letter of Provenance from Hunt Auctions that states that the skates were obtained by a collector who received items directly from players and team employees in the era, the skates have been signed by Barrasso over the outside of each with heavily faded gold marker ink signatures. Originally coming with a JSA Auction LOA for the signatures as well as an additional Letter of Provenance from the original recipient, those are no longer present and will not accompany the lot.
