Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction November 2024
Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the New York Rangers and Buffalo Sabres played at Madison Square Garden on October 7, 2001. Both teams wore special jerseys with “New York” diagonally across the front, the Blueshirts replacing their customary "Rangers" for their 5-4 overtime win. The night started with a touching pre-game ceremony honoring the men and women in uniform who died trying to save lives in the World Trade Center attacks. The NYPD and FDNY hockey teams lined up on the ice and the Rangers stood between them during their introductions. Theoren Fleury has signed this jersey with the 9/11 ribbon patch on the left shoulder, one of three jerseys he wore on this special night. Size 54 tagging is affixed to the collar, with partially embroidered CCM and NHL patches on the back neckline and bottom hem respectively. Styled with drop shadow tackle twill numbers, including “New York” diagonally across the front. Obviously light game-wear includes a couple of marks on the right front tail, including a solid black diagonal mark to the bottom of the hem. Fleury applied his signature on the back #4. Following the game, the jerseys were auctioned off to raise money for the Twin Towers Fund, with the auction proceeds eclipsing $215,000. An LOA from the Rangers will accompany along with a MeiGray certificate of registration.
