Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
Coached by Toronto Maple Leafs legend Turk Broda, the Toronto Marlboros boasted a talented squad comprised of numerous future NHL stars during the mid-1950s, with the club winning consecutive Memorial Cup championships in 1955 and 1956 as the junior hockey champions of Canada. Hailing from the estate of Marlboros executive T. P. Topping, offered here are his Ontario Hockey Association and Memorial Cup championship medals from the Marlboros victories in both 1955 and 1956, with both wins coming over the Regina Pats, as well as a Marlboros blazer patch from the same era. Starting with the medals, the OHA examples each sport enamel Ontario coat of arms crests and "OHA" plus "Ontario Hockey Association" over the front along with imagery of a raised player and their original red, white and blue coloured ribbons tied through the support rings while the 1955 medal is engraved with "Marlboro Jr "A" Hockey Club - Champions - 1955 - T. P. Topping". With the only difference for the engraving on the 1956 OHA medal being that his name is listed as "Al Topping", the Memorial Cup medals are engraved the same way over their reverses while the fronts include a different raised player image, "OHA" in raised letters and "Memorial Cup" plus "C-A-H-A" in enamel over the top and bottom. Each is stamped with "Trophy Craft" over their bottom reverse to go along with "GF" to indicate that they are gold filled. Also including Topping's 1956 Memorial Cup champions tie clip by Birks that is stamped with "10K" and the maker over the backside, the front is engraved with "Memorial Cup 1956" and features the Duke of Marlboros crown logo in front of a pair of crossed hockey sticks and below "MHC" in raised letters while a small diamond has been set in at the bottom underneath the crown. Finally, the last piece included in the lot is Topping's 1950s Marlboros blazer patch. Measuring roughly 5 1/4" x 5 1/4" overall, a Marlboros logo has been embroidered into it on a navy background while "Marlboros" is embroidered underneath in yellow letters. Remaining in overall great condition, the medals themselves also remain in a pleasing condition state, showing some light wear from handling and age as well as scratches and a bit of tarnishing in spots.
