Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
A crowd of 71,271 fanatical hockey die-hards packed Buffalo’s Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Year’s Day in 2008 to witness the first ever NHL Winter Classic. The outdoor game pitted the hometown Sabres against the Pittsburgh Penguins with Sid the Kid’s shootout goal becoming a lasting image of the contest. This jersey was worn during the first period by Penguins forward Ryan Malone. Made by Reebok and featuring a size “58+” tag on the inner collar, the front is stylized with a throwback Penguins crest under a tie-up neck and the Winter Classic patch sewn-on the right breast. The sleeves and verso feature Malone’s number “12” in dual-layer tackle twill with “Malone” on an affixed matching nameplate. Worn for just a single period of play, there are no obvious signs of game wear. There is a tiny black mark on the bottom of the “2” on the back and the white twill of both double-twill white and navy No. 12 display a faint mirror image of the Penguins crest on the front of the jersey that has bled through. A Penguins team patch resides over the inside hem of the jersey to go along with a MeiGray patch numbered “E05846” and according to their population report the jersey is a “Blue Throwback - Winter Classic 1/1/08 (Period 1)” example. An LOA from MeiGray will accompany this gamer from the original Winter Classic.
