Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
Playing his junior hockey as a member of the Ontario Hockey League's Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, Ron Francis was drafted 4th overall by the Hartford Whalers at the 1981 NHL Entry Draft and would go on to play a total of 1731 games in the National Hockey League with the likes of the Whalers as well as the Pittsburgh Penguins, Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs. A two-time Stanley Cup champion and Hockey Hall of Fame inductee in 2007, offered here is this video-matched Penguins jersey worn by Francis during the 1996-97 season. A heavyweight knit garment made by Starter, brand and "NHL Center Ice Authentic Collection" labeling is affixed to the inner collar above a sewn in twill swatch that displays a "54-R" size designation that has had Francis' number "10" penned to it in black marker ink along with an "A" in matching ink. Having had both the Starter and NHL shield logos embroidered into the reverse hem, the front of the jersey is decorated with a Penguins team crest that features embroidered details while the distinguished alternate captain's "A" appears over the left breast. Styled over the sleeves and verso with Francis' number "10" in stacked tri-layer tackle twill numerals, "Francis" is spelt out in single layer white twill letters across the affixed matching nameplate at the top of the reverse. Displaying excellent game-use throughout its entirety including stick marks over the front, reverse and both sleeves, each sleeve shows a thick team repair as well as board burns and pilling over the forearms and cuffs. Also sporting an unrepaired hole over the lower front and red coloured board paint transfers on the inside of the right sleeve, more pilling is found around the hem and on the interior. Retaining a damaged fight strap on the interior, the jersey is accompanied by an LOA and has been video-matched to a screenshot taken from Pittsburgh's January 25th, 1997 game against the New York Rangers which shows a match to stick marks over the top portion of the left sleeve.
