Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction February 2025
A product of the Ontario Hockey Association's Hamilton Red Wings who was drafted 37th overall by the St. Louis Blues at the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft, Ron Climie would play a pair of seasons with the Kansas City Blues of the Central Hockey League before jumping ship to the World Hockey Association for the 1972-73 season and going on to play 249 games in the league before retiring after a three (3) game stint with the New England Whalers in 1976-77. Offered here, we present this Ottawa Nationals jersey worn by Climie during the 1972-73 season, the inaugural season for the WHA and the only year in which the Nationals would be in the league. A durene knit garment made by Tricot Sport Maska, a partially detached brand label is affixed to the inner collar while the once attached washing instructions label has been lost to time. Measuring out to roughly a modern size "44" and featuring a classic style tie-neck collar which retains its original lace, the front of the jersey has been decorated with a Nationals team crest in layered tackle twill while the sleeves and verso have had Conacher's number "23" sewn to them in dual layer blue-over-red tackle twill numerals. Having had "Climie" spelt out in single layer blue twill letters across the affixed white twill nameplate that is affixed across the top of the back, the jersey exhibits game-wear via stick marks over the front and both sleeves, red board paint transfer marks over the upper front, light pilling on the interior, rubbing/pilling and sweat staining near both cuffs, with light red colour bleed in the same areas as well, and finally, some minor staining over the front. Void of a fight strap on the interior, the jersey has been photo-matched to Climie's team issued Nationals press photo/post card, which shows a match to the light stick mark/scuff through the bottom left portion of the maple leaf in the Nationals front crest.
