Historical Hockey and Sports Memorabilia Auction June 2025
A 1970-71 Montreal Canadiens Stanley Cup ring is a rare find indeed as Habs players were given TV sets to commemorate their title while an undisclosed number of rings were given to front office personnel. The only other 1970-71 Canadiens Stanley Cup ring that we are aware of was presented to scout Florent Potvin that we sold in the past and it had a red stone set in the tableau, otherwise it is the same as this one presented to Ron Caron.
Caron was the head coach of the 1970-71 AHL Montreal Voyageurs. The Old Professor later worked as the Canadiens’ head scout and assistant general manager and would add five more titles to his credit with Montreal in the 1970s, with the Canadiens also claiming the Cup in 1972-73 and four straight seasons from 1975-76 to 1978-79.
“World Hockey Champions” is displayed in raised letters on the bezel surrounding the tableau, which has diamonds set in it. It is unknown if the ring was ordered like that or if it came originally with a red stone like the ring presented to Potvin and was subsequently updated. The NHL shield on one shank sits under a banner with “1970-71” displayed, while the other shank displays “Caron” above the Canadiens legendary CH logo. The ring weighs approximately 19 grams and has “14” stamped and partially visible inside the size 7 band.
According to our consignor he purchased the ring as originally coming from the family of Ron “Prof” Caron. It remains in lovely condition with obviously proud wear showing in smoothing to the shanks some scuffs to the band that do not diminish their details and display.
